My family and I have always had trouble keeping our spices organized. Cooking often resulted in lost time searching the back of the cabinet or drawer for just the right spice. Coming up with a quick fix was easy for Fitzy. In no time he used some scrap wood from a previous project to build mini stands for the spice drawer. Look…now they are beautifully organized as well as nice and neat.
You want to start off by measuring the inside of your drawer. Our drawer is 19 x 19 x 3 1/2 inches. You may need to adjust the measurements I provide to accommodate the actual size of your drawer.
3 pieces at: 5 3/4 inches depth x 18 7/8 inches width
To make it an easy fit we cut the long pieces 18 7/8 inches. This width works great as the stand slides right inside the drawer yet doesn’t move around once in place.
We cut the depth at 5 3/4 inches. This was just the right size to accommodate the different sized bottles while also providing a 1 5/8″ inch clearance when opening and closing the drawer. We also had enough space to hold multiple sized bottles.
3 pieces at: 1 1/4 inches depth x 11 inches width
This provides a 1 5/8″ inch clearance which was plenty for the large bottles. Now someone may ask why we only cut the width at 11 inches. If the truth be told…that is what we had left in scrap wood. You could run this board the full 18 7/8 inches but don’t really need to. The bottles are large enough they don’t slip behind or underneath the stand when in place. Fitzy put a slight angle on the 1 1/4 inch x 11 inch board so this piece sits flush in the drawer but you don’t really have to if you don’t want.
Now you will use the finishing nails to connect the two pieces. We used four per stand.
Once each stand is complete simply place in drawer. We started from the back and worked forward. Now…look how easy that was! Supplies:
1/2 inch sanded plywood (we used left over wood from a previous project)
3 pieces at: 5 3/4 inches depth x 18 7/8 inches width
3 pieces at: 1 1/4 inches depth x 11 inches width
12 finishing nails (4 for each stand)
Saw
Hammer
If you are a little OCD like me…you can even organize the spices alphabetically. Trust me…it sounds crazy but makes locating the right spice in the moment so much easier!!!
Total project time: less than one hour.
